Wink’s Moore on the Market: First of all- there are annuities available today with bonuses as high as 20%.
Secondly- it is a bit misleading to say “over time, as the annuity accrues interest, the investor receives periodic payouts.”
The annuitant only receives periodic payouts if they annuitize, take payments under a Guaranteed Lifetime Withdrawal Benefit, or take withdrawals from the contract.
I also think it is disingenuous to suggest that bonus annuities offer “potentially higher returns.” Typically, bonus annuities have lesser rates than their non-bonus brethren.
No surprises here. It just seems SmartAsset doesn’t know annuities well enough to be writing about them. -sjm
