‘Are they all they’re claiming to be?’ What is an IUL, and what do advisers think of them?

Wink’s Note: No, no, NO!
On indexed life, it is inaccurate to say that a “portion of the funds are invested in a stock market index.” The purchaser is NEVER invested in the stock market index with these products.
Later, an advisor is quoted as saying, “Most people try to get the most insurance for the least amount of money.” While probably true, this statement should never appear in an article about indexed universal life. These products are by-and-large designed for accumulation purposes, and will fail if minimally funded. We don’t want readers to draw conclusions that this product will get you the coverage you need, at the least cost.
Ultimately, this article was a head-scratcher for me. It was all “rah rah” IUL, and then it had a realistic and stark warning from Elliot Dole, CFP®, regarding illustrations. I was thinking it might be paid content, but am now thinking it was the journalist’s best attempt at a balanced article.
