Nationwide considers up to 200 Des Moines job cuts

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company could eliminate up to 200 jobs in its Des Moines office as it contracts out some services.
Executives at the Columbus, Ohio-based insurer are looking at shedding some commercial insurance processing jobs, Nationwide spokesman Joe Case said Thursday. The company does not yet know exactly how many of the 500 affected jobs — including 200 in Des Moines — will be eliminated.
Nationwide is one of the largest private employers in Des Moines, with about 3,300 employees. Case said the company will make decisions on which jobs will be eliminated between now and the middle of 2021. The company will provide every laid-off worker 60 days’ notice and a severance package.
“This is not something where you flip the switch and make decisions overnight,” Case said.
Commercial insurance processors handle business applications, policy changes and correspondence. Case said Nationwide is one of the last companies to contract out some of this work.
