In honor of Life Insurance Awareness Month in September, my startup released the results of a study evaluating gender, household roles and life insurance. Our aim in conducting the research was to understand whether there are differences in how women and men financially value their lives. Turns out, there are some key disparities, which underscore a critical issue for families across the country.
The study revealed that although male and female respondents equally believed that their death would have a substantial impact on their family’s quality of life, women were less likely to have coverage compared to men. And if they did have coverage, it was only about half as much as men.
These results show that a life insurance gender gap does indeed exist. Unfortunately, this wasn’t a completely surprising revelation considering the larger societal issue about equal pay for women.
