PartnerRe North America Life is getting ready to test a tobacco use fib detection system from Verisk Analytics Inc., Verisk announced Thursday.
If the system works, it could help a life insurer use telephone interview results and applicant-provided data to see whether an applicant has somehow left out information about tobacco use.
A life insurer could give the applicants who get flagged more attention, then send the other applicants through an accelerated underwriting process, according to Verisk.
The system is part of a PartnerRe effort to use Verisk technology to update its underwriting operations, to reduce use of in-person medical testing while adjusting for the possibility that applicants could lie, or leave out important information.
