WASHINGTON – The insurance industry gained 2,000 jobs in January over December, an increase of 7% even as the overall unemployment rate edged up, according to preliminary figures from the U.S. Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 304,000 in January over December, and the unemployment rate rose by 0.1 percentage point to 4.0 in January. The number of unemployed persons increased by roughly 200,000 to 6.5 million.
The employment statistics in the January jobs report were not affected by the partial shutdown of the federal government, which ended on Jan. 25, said William J. Wiatrowski, BLS acting commissioner.
