Anatomy of an Elder Fraud: How a Woman Stole an 84-Year-Old Man’s Annuity and Home

An appellate court in Texas has affirmed a woman’s conviction for theft of property from an elderly person in a case that highlights the dangers of elder fraud.
The Case
Wade Watkins, who was born in 1925, moved to Galveston, Texas, in 1945 and started working at Gaido’s Restaurant. He worked there for many years.
Mr. Watkins executed a will in 1989 that designated numerous persons as potential recipients of his estate upon his death. This group included Mr. Watkins’ wife, Elise, and other relatives, but it did not include Shirley Fanuiel.
