Partial Federal Government Shutdown Hampers Insurance Industry

NEW YORK – The longest partial federal government shutdown in U.S. history is frustrating the insurance industry. Canceled meetings, hampered regulatory progress and the long-term economic impact of the shutdown, including the danger of civil servants shying away from future government employment, are among their concerns.
“It’s obviously very distracting,” said David Sampson, president and chief executive officer of the American Property Casualty Insurance Association. “The federal government right now obviously is stalemated on its most basic function, which is providing the funding for very basic government services. As long as they’re distracted by that and stalemated on that they can’t move forward on any of these other important key public policy issues,” he said at the Joint Industry Forum.
