AIG Teams Actively Support Houston Colleagues and Community Following Harvey
September 5, 2017 by AIG
AIG has announced that it is providing $1 million in aid to organizations focused on emergency relief and ongoing recovery following Hurricane Harvey. The company will allocate $500,000 to Houston-based nonprofits for immediate local relief efforts. The remaining $500,000 will go toward critical medium- and longer-term recovery efforts in partnership with The Center for Disaster Philanthropy, a leader in strategic disaster-related giving.
AIG and its Houston employees have a long history of working with these organizations through years of volunteerism and employee contributions. AIG colleagues in Houston have already been active in their own neighborhoods, helping to rescue those trapped by the flooding and opening their doors to people without homes. For example, AIG’s Don Paullo acted decisively to rescue over 100 neighbors and pets in his canoe. Leigh Harrington and his family opened their doors to neighbors, earning their home the nickname “Hotel Harrington” from friends.
“We applaud and recognize the courage and generosity of our people in Houston, and the outpouring of support from our colleagues and partners around the world,” said Brian Duperreault, AIG President and Chief Executive Officer. “We have a strong presence in Houston, and have been focused on ensuring the safety of our employees and their families, while responding to the needs of our clients in the area. We greatly appreciate and support the efforts of local nonprofit partners who are well-placed to meet the needs of the community today, and respond to the longer-term needs that will emerge as the full impact of Hurricane Harvey is known.”
AIG teams are taking active steps to support colleagues and the community:
- AIG has been in contact with each employee in Houston to confirm and re-confirm that they are safe and have adequate supplies. All have been accounted for.
- AIG’s Global Security team has been providing on-the-ground support, including evacuating colleagues in need of help and providing emergency supplies like food and water.
- Travel Guard, AIG’s travel services provider, has stepped in as a single point of contact for all non-life-threatening matters, whether employees are in Houston or trying to make their way back to their homes there.
- AIG is making emergency financial assistance available to its employees that have suffered damage or loss due to Harvey.
- Through its Matching Grants Program, AIG is matching 2:1 over $70,000 that has been donated so far by employees to eligible U.S.-based charitable organizations that are supporting relief efforts.
- AIG colleagues have purchased over $35,000 to date in Target eGift cards to be distributed to colleagues personally affected by this disaster.
