Brenda Cushing, former chief financial officer of Athene USA, has been elected by the board of American Equity Investment Life Holding Co. as a non-employee director, and has also been appointed to the audit committee. She fills the vacancy created on the board by the death of Harley Whitfield Sr. Cushing’s initial term will expire on the date of American Equity’s next annual shareholders meeting, at which time she will stand for election for a term expiring in 2018, according a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The board has determined that Cushing, who most recently worked as an independent insurance consultant, is independent under the corporate governance standards of the New York Stock Exchange and meets the applicable standards of the NYSE and the SEC for service on the company’s audit committee. From August 2014 to August 2015, Cushing was executive vice president and CFO of Athene Holding Ltd., and from October 2013 to August 2014 she held the same positions with Athene USA Corp.
