They are on fire to read!

Last year, Sheryl J. Moore funded Mrs. Tully Lahmann’s DonorsChoose.org project on Wink’s behalf. Mrs. Tully Lahmann needed to obtain a graphic library of books that consisted of graphic novels, biographies, and graphic nonfiction books for her classroom. Graphic novels are a great way to entice students to love reading, while simultaneously building their reading skills as the books contain rich higher level vocabulary; which many of her students have often not been exposed to. Graphic novels encourage students to use their inferring, questioning and making connections. “Getting kids to read is a challenge. However, with graphic novels, I can’t get them into their hands quickly enough. These books will help me meet that need.” Mrs. Tully Lahmann commented.
Dear Sheryl,
I want to thank you for truly making an impact in my students’ lives. Lack of access to quality books is on of the biggest obstacles for low-income students. Putting literature in their hands is something I take very seriously. I want books that will inspire, encourage, and create readers.
Graphic novels are becoming incredibly popular with kids. They really help my English Language Learners, because they can use the illustration cues as well as the text to understand the story. This project has really inspired my class. I have one student in particular that read them all so quickly that he suddenly realized that I had no more graphic novels. He was incredibly disappointed. However, I was able to guide him to another text that covered Jamestown. He had read about Jamestown in the graphic novel.
Thank you for your gift. You made a difference.
With gratitude,
Mrs. Tully Lahmann
