New York Life shuffling, eliminating jobs as it plans tech hub in Jersey City

New York Life is in the process of establishing a technology hub in Jersey City, resulting in some jobs being transferred from its Clinton facility and the potential loss of other positions.
The insurance company issued a WARN notice earlier this month indicating approximately 70 employees would lose their jobs as a result of the information technology changes taking place.
New York Life is relocating its main office from Parsippany to Jersey City, but has other offices in the state, including the one in Clinton. That facility is currently the company’s primary data center, and only one in the Northeast.
“We are currently engaged in a technology transformation that is designed to help us remain competitive and a leader in customer service,” William Werfelman, a spokesman for the company, told NJBIZ. “Part of this involves establishing a technology hub in new space we are leasing in Jersey City. As a result of that project, some 40-50 of our employees in Clinton will be transferring to Jersey City. While we continue to fill new positions in Clinton, some positions will also be filled with consultants on site in Clinton. Some positions there are also being eliminated.”
Werfelman said any employee being laid off will receive at least 90 days’ advance notice, as well as severance.
