Maryland Insurance Commissioner Therese M. Goldsmith — who was appointed by Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley in 2011 for a four-year term that ends on May 31, 2015 — will step down from her post on Jan. 21, 2015, a Maryland Insurance Administration spokesperson said.
Goldsmith will step down on the same day that Republican Governor-elect Larry Hogan is scheduled to assume office. Hogan won Maryland’s gubernatorial election on Nov. 4 to succeed Gov. O’Malley who is term-limited.
The Maryland Insurance Administration provided the following statement by Commissioner Goldsmith: “I am profoundly grateful to Governor O’Malley for the opportunity to serve the citizens of Maryland these past 3 1/2 years. It has been a genuine privilege to work with the many talented and dedicated public servants at the Maryland Insurance Administration.”
Prior to her appointment as Maryland’s insurance commissioner, Goldsmith was a commissioner on the Public Service Commission of Maryland. Before entering public service, Goldsmith was a partner at the law firm of Hogan & Hartson LLP (now Hogan Lovells), where she was part of the firm’s white collar litigation practice group.
Commissioner Goldsmith has been serving as vice chair of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ (NAIC) Market Regulation and Consumer Affairs (D) Committee and the Market Actions Working Group and chair of the NAIC’s Market Regulation Accreditation Working Group.
