Principal, Casey’s make 2014 Fortune 500 list

Two companies based in the Des Moines metro have made the 2014 Fortune 500 list.
Principal Financial Group and Casey’s General Stores were the only Iowa companies to make the list, which ranks companies based on revenue.
Des Moines-based Principal ranked 298, down eight spots from the 2013 list.
Ankeny-based Casey’s ranked 389, up from 392 last year.
Three other Iowa-based companies ranked when the list is expanded to the top 1,000 U.S. companies:
- Cedar Rapids-based Rockwell Collins ranked 535, which is down from 511 in 2013.
- West Des Moines-based American Equity Investment Life Holding ranked 808. The insurance company did not have a previous rank on the Fortune list.
- Muscatine-based HNI Corp. ranked 956, down from 946 last year.
Arkansas-based Wal-Mart maintained its No. 1 rank on the Fortune 500 list, with sales of $476 billion, while Texas-based Exxon Mobil stayed at No. 2.
