Aviva life insurance reborn as Accordia Life

The life insurance division of the former Aviva USA earns a new name today: Accordia Life, a subsidiary of Global Atlantic Financial Group.
Accordia Life will serve as the downtown Des Moines-based life insurance company within Global Atlantic. The Bermuda-based firm bought the life insurance side of Aviva in a sale completed in October.
The launch of Accordia marks the start of a new business within Global Atlantic, as well as the formal reorganization of Aviva’s life insurance side into the company.
Michael Miller, Accordia’s president, said the division will employ a team of about 200 people, most of them in Des Moines and made up of former Aviva employees. Global Atlantic employs more than 700 people.
“We were very fortunate that we were able to, when we transitioned the life insurance business over, to hand-select the key team that we wanted to move forward with,” said Miller, who joined Accordia as part of Global Atlantic’s acquisition of Aviva’s life insurance division.
Miller said the company has an “aggressive growth strategy,” which includes launching at least two new products, or policies, each year and seeing double-digit percentage growth in the sale of insurance policies. Accordia has a goal to sell $70 million in life insurance policies in 2014, the company said.
Accordia will launch with policies for indexed universal life insurance, universal life insurance and term life insurance, the company said in a statement.
In addition to Aviva’s workforce, Miller said Accordia will use Aviva’s prior suite of products and distribution network. The company has certificates to operate in all but four states: Wyoming, New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut.
