Why advisors need to talk their loved ones about life insurance

BLOG: When I was 20 years old, I suddenly lost my older brother in a car accident. This event was extremely tragic to my entire family. The days to follow included picking out a casket, cemetery plots, programs and songs for the funeral. It was extremely trying for everyone in my family to have to do these things during such an emotional event. However, one thing we did not have to worry about was how everything was going to get paid for.
Fortunately, my parents were smart enough to take out a $25,000 life insurance policy on all of their children when we were born. It was so much easier during this time knowing that my older brother was covered and that we didn’t need to worry about the funeral costs. Seeing first-hand just how much life insurance can help with funeral costs has made it that much easier to have conversations with family and friends about their life insurance needs.
Many advisors whom we talk to are afraid to approach family and friends about life insurance because they feel they are being too pushy. I promise you there are a million horror stories of advisors out there who wished they had a second chance to talk to a loved one or family member about life insurance because they waited, something tragic happened and now it’s too late. Remember that you don’t have to be abrasive about it; just ask them about the last time someone reviewed their policies or if they would like a life insurance consultation.
I invite everyone to share how they approached their loved ones so that we can help some of the advisors who have not taken that leap of faith yet. Please comment below and let us know what has worked for you when approaching family and friends about life insurance.
