IRI Research to Explore Retirement Needs of Same-Sex Couples

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Insured Retirement Institute (IRI) announced yesterday a new research initiative that will explore the retirement needs of same-sex couples. IRI’s focus on this market was heightened by the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Windsor. The Supreme Court struck down Section 3 of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) as unconstitutional, meaning that same-sex marriages recognized under state law also must be recognized for federal law purposes.
“When the Supreme Court ruled on DOMA, there were lots of questions being asked about this market, and the search for answers quickly revealed how understudied this market was,” said Cathy Weatherford, IRI President and CEO. “Our mission at IRI is to provide the insured retirement industry and financial advisors with market research to better understand the needs of their clients and potential customers. IRI’s research in this area will be a first step toward better understanding this market and its retirement needs.”
The research initiative was announced yesterday at Vision: IRI Annual Meeting 2013 by IRI President and CEO Cathy Weatherford. IRI anticipates that the report will be available to IRI members later this year.
