Steve Kimbell to Lead Vermont Department

Peter Shumlin, the Vermont governor elect, has picked Steve Kimbell to be the state’s next commissioner of Banking, Insurance, Securities and Health Care Administration. At a press conference announcing a series of appointments to Shumlin’s administration, Kimbell said the regulated community can expect a “consistent, predictable and collaborative approach to regulation” from him.
Kimbell, a lobbyist, retired from Kimbell Shermam Ellis L.L.P., Montpelier, Vt., in May after 34 years. Kimbell founded the firm in 1987.
The firm describes itself as a multi-state government, public affairs and communications firm that also provides legislative and regulatory strategy in government affairs.
In 1976 Kimbell worked at the Vermont Statehouse as an attorney with Vermont Legal Aid. He spent two years as a policy adviser to former Gov. Madeleine Kunin before returning to private practice.
Shumlin chose Anya Rader Wallack to be special assistant to the governor for health care. At the press conference Kimbell said Wallack was one of the first employees at Kimbel Sherman Ellis 25 years ago.
“Now I’ll be working for her,” Shumlin said.
